1850 Templecon Testing: #Lictorshame vs White Scars

Back at the Battle For Salvation Club again.

Ed called me up for a game, wanted to practice the missions for the Onslaught Tournament at Templecon coming up in February.  They are running last years ETC missions and so we wanted to get a jump on preparation since they involve a little more complexity.  In the missions you are playing a modified maelstrom that carefully balances true malestrom with the much less complex BAO style nicely.  You are also playing kill points, and there is a primary mission that changes every round.

I was running #LictorShame with a few modifications from 11th Company.
Hive Tyrant – wings, 2x twin linked devourer, electroshock grubs – 240

Thunderfire cannon

So we were playing vanguard strike.  4 objectives.  Each player would roll and hold 3 maelstrom cards.  Could claim up to 2 per turn, and discard one each turn if you wanted.  We rolled night fight.

My warlord Tyrant rolled feel no pain and psyscream, other flyrant rolled paroxysm and the horror.  Warlord trait was the pin check power from strategic.  I won the roll to go first and passed that honor to Ed.

He deployed everything on the board.  Thunderfire in back ruin fortified with a bike squad.  Chapter master and khan in command squad in middle.  Other bikes evenly split on the sides.  Objective 1 was in top left ruin with his cannon, objective two was in the center ruin on my side of the wall, number 3 was in the ruin near my edge on the right, and number 4 is on that brown hill on the top right.

I deployed my bastion with comms and my two flyrants.  Everything that could deepstrike did and the stealers outflanked.
 Then Ed scouted around.
And then he moved up.  On the left flank he lined the board edge to both make it difficult for mawlocs to hit him and also hope my stealers would randomly come in on that side and be unable to come on.  Melta bikes shot at the bastion and did 3 results, but nightfight giving me stealth kept the bastion from dying.  Command squad came across middle and two bike squads hugged far middle behind the ruins.  One bike squad bubble wrapped his thunderfire cannon.  Ed's maelstrom were control objective 1 which he did and a few others one of which he discarded.
I flew forward with the Tyrants.  Screamed killing an attack bike, finished its squad off with shooting for first blood.  Also cast feel no pain.  Killed another attack bike and wounded another.  My maelstroms were all hold objective points so I ignored them for now.
Ed drew some new maelstorms, think he had to kill a psyker and kill a few units in one shooting phase. Melta bikes killed the bastion.  Shot a bunch of gravs at the warlord tyrant who jinked and didnt take any wounds with good cover and feel no pain.
Reserves!!!  Got everything but one unit of stealers, rippers, and a mucloid.  Started by dropping mawlocs on the bikes and thunderfire cannon in the top left ruin.  Killed the techmarine and 3 bikers with one mawloc, another scattered off, third tried to kill some bikers on the board edge but scattered off and mishapped back to reserve.  Stealers outflanked on the wrong side and died with the board blocked.  Death leaper and 4 lictors joined the mawlocs in the top left ruin and killed the last two bikes with shooting.  I put 3 lictors in the middle of the board and they shot at some bikers.  I put one more in the top right hill.  I dropped two mucloids over to the left near the edge bikers.  Spore mines I dropped all around his command squad to make a little wall.  Flyrants moved up.  Warlord cast feel no pain and scream again, scream did nothing.  He snap shot his devourers and killed a bike.  The other Flyrant killed a 5 man bike squad. I scored 2 maelstroms for objectives this turn.
A little more ineffective shooting at the Tyrants.  Bike squad in the middle assaulted and killed a lictor in the ruin and consolidated inside.  Command squad broke up and killed some spore mines.  Bikes on the table edge killed the mucloids and wounded a mawloc.
Genestealers came in from reserve, bottom right ruin and moved on the objective there.  Rippers land near the Lictor on the right hill.  Mawloc returned and precision dropped some bikes who fled off the board.  Other two burrowed.  Flyrants shuffled just a bit and warlord tried to scream but failed to do damage, feel no pain went off.  He shot and killed the one bike he could see, rest were in ruin.  Other flyrant shot at the melta attack bikes and killed one.  Lictor shot and assaulted the remaining attack bike from his position on the right hill... but died to multimelta overwatch.  Other Lictors shuffled around.
Bikes jumped out of ruin and shot at warlord tyrant, wounded him and grounded him.  Command squad shot the other tyrant and he jinked away the damage.  Grav bikes moved off the table edge and shot the mawloc wounding him 5 times.  Melta bikes shot at a lictor and killed it.  Lone melta attack bike shot and then assaulted a lictor near in the top middle terrain feature, no one died and the lictor hit and ran towards the command squad.  4 bikers assaulted the flyrant he killed one or two and was stuck in combat.
Mawlocs return to precision bomb the command squad.  Wounded mawloc burrows.  Kill 3 vets and the apothecary.  Lictors shoot and assault attack bike and kill it.  Flyrant snap shots at the full attack bike squad on the left and does a wound.  Warlord kills all but the last biker in assault.  Mawloc runs into the middle terrain to claim a maelstrom point for the objective there.  Also get one for line breaker this turn.
Khan seperates and chases down a lictor, lone veteran kills a wounded lictor.  Chaptermaster goes tyrant hunting and does a wound.  3 attack bikes assault death leaper and dont wound him.  5 regular bikers assault and kill a lictor.
Mawloc returns and kills the three attack bikes around death leaper.  Other mawlocs burrow.  FLyrant lands to get more control of next turns movement and wastes the bikers with the lictors help.  Flyrant dies to the chaptermaster.  Feeling pretty good.  I have a solid take on 2 objectives, good position on a third, and he has 3 models left.
Lone grav gun vet kills the mawloc who had only one wound left.  Chapter master and khan are 11.5 inches away from tyrant....
And roll a 12 to charge.... there goes that good feeling.  Wounds me twice, I do nothing.
Kinda forgot to keep track here but now its turn 6 I guess.  Mawlocs return and kill khan, one mishaps back to reserve, the other mishaps and he places it close .  Death leaper and another lictor jump in to help the tyrant who paroxyms the chapter master.  Manage to do one wound to him and he does one in return to the tyrant who is hanging on by a thread.  Get a point for killing a character.  Chapter master hits and runs out.
Ed rolls a 1 and the game ends.... phew.  So we start totaling scores.  I have 3 objectives to his none, 6 maelstroms to his 4, and we tie 10-10 on kill points.  So I win pretty solidly.  Good game.  The ETC missions seem daunting at first, but by printing out their intricate scoring template it actually is pretty simple and fun, and a big improvement on even the BAO take on maelstroms.

  1. Sounds like a nice game for the lictorshame.
Just a thought, I listened to the podcast interview you did, at the end you guys talked up Psychic Scream a lot - do you know that you can't kill models outside of it's poor 6" range? And since you have to stay at least 1" away when casting, you can rarely affect more than a few models. It's great against Tyranids, and Daemons. But still very situational.

  2. I hadnt really thought about that. Had to look at the wording and you are correct. Its still a fantastic power and like you said its super destructive to high priced one model psyker units. But it is still really good against a lot of other matchups, it ignores cover, can hit units in combat, is ap 2 and such which nids lack. So its still one of the powers Ill hope to roll in most matchups.

Id rate catalyst as the power you always hope to roll. Then after that many of the powers are situationally useful. Onslaught has some great uses in certain matchups, warp lance can be good if unreliable, psy scream is great against non mechd forces or for good late game mop up, the horror can be situationally great, and paoxysm is a useful power as well.
